Onshore manufacturing is key to Australia’s sustainable economic future

March 30, 2022

Davell Products has an excellent track record of manufacturing quality Australian products continuously since 1946.

The pandemic highlighted the absolute practicality of manufacturing onshore. Lockdowns, border closures and drastic disruptions to staffing, output and freight movement have significantly impacted overseas supply chains.

A clear case for manufacturing onshore

Australia is one of the most geographically isolated markets in the world, and consumers soon learned the importance of locally made products during the global pandemic.

As a society, we experienced shortfalls of several key products that people needed urgently to operate effectively. Other critical shortages, from new cars to the diesel engine additive AdBlue, illustrate what happens when a key sector depends solely on imported goods.

Supporting Australian manufacturing for our long-term post-Covid recovery is key to factoring in the potential for future pandemics and global supply chain disruptions. The goal should be to manufacture key products and many more new ones onshore.

Onshore benefits

One of the main benefits of onshore manufacturing in Australia is that it avoids the issues associated with international shipping.

Importing items into Australia have these disadvantages:

  • Much longer time frames (it might take six weeks or longer for sea freight)
  • More work on logistics to factor in international sea freight timetables and timezones for communications
  • More significant risks such as damaged freight or port strikes delaying cargo
  • High costs such as freight, international marine cargo insurance, import duties and taxes

Manufacturing in Australia has these advantages:

  • Better timeframes enable producers to be more responsive to local market needs
  • Quality control is easier to manage
  • Manufacturing locally is more sustainable with fewer ‘miles’ involved.

Davell’s onshore capacity

As an Australian manufacturer of storage and locker solutions with decades of experience, Davell has the capacity to serve the local market.

Davell provides Australian customers with a positive experience:

What we need for our onshore manufacturing future

We know that consumer support for Australian made products is at an alltime high. So what must happen to enable the manufacturing future that businesses and customers want?

These are some of the essential ingredients:

• Partnerships with other local businesses to strengthen supply chains

Davell looks for partners who can support our requirements and future growth, and we have longstanding partnerships with other Australian companies.

• Businesses being prepared to step up, pivot, innovate and grow

Davell invests in technological innovations that enhance our products. For example, partnering with Australian company Yellowbox, so our lockers feature new mobile app based smart lock solutions.

• Customers who value quality Australian Made products

As a company, we continue to appreciate our customers who recognise the value and quality of Australian-made products.

• Policy and economic settings that encourage investment in Australian manufacturing

With the right policy and economic settings supporting Australian manufacturing, we can remain competitive as suppliers of choice.
