Counterfeit goods are a trillion-dollar business. With our society becoming ever-reliant on technology, counterfeiters are now focusing heavily on electronic products; specifically, mobile charging adapters.
A lot of smartphone owners may have used a fake charging adapter at some point in their life. With the accessibility of counterfeit chargers extending to a lot of major supermarkets, dollar shops and electronic stores, more often than not fakes are unwittingly purchased.
A new study from UL, a company that tests and certifies electrical products, has shown in detail the abysmal quality of these goods. Of 400 iPhone chargers tested, they uncovered a 99 per cent failure rate.
Some chargers were immediately damaged in the process of energising, and 12 samples had a high capacity for electrocution. The results are concerning with a number of consumers losing their lives to shoddy counterfeit chargers in recent years, including that of a NSW mother.
At Davell, it’s our resolve to ensure that all of our charging products are both safe, reliable and accessible.

All indications point to the fact that fake chargers aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
So here are the some tell-tale signs to identify fakes:
- Spelling and grammatical errors on the brand name.
- An absence of a certification mark sticker, colour (all Apple-official chargers are strictly white only).
- Unusually cheap prices.
