Many Australian students place emphasis on belonging to a ‘House’ and proudly display their House Colours. Coming from the days of the great English boarding schools where students were accommodated in different boarding houses, School Houses are traditionally named after a prominent school identity, or historical figure.
Within schools, each House group has distinctive colours to identify house teams at sports and swimming carnivals or other school events. A school House may also feature other symbols, such as a coat of arms or crest. While the rivalry between House Colours has been played out within schools, it has also been reflected in popular culture, particularly through the Harry Potter series of novels and films.
The importance of representing achievement and excellence are instilled in the tradition of House Colours with students proudly supporting their allocated House throughout their school life.
