At a time when hygiene measures are moving to new levels to halt the spread of COVID-19, Davell Products is able to offer our customers a silver ion based antimicrobial protective coating for our product range in White Satin finish.
Understanding antimicrobial coatings
Dulux’s Clinikill Antimicrobial coatings work by preventing microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and some viruses) from adhering to a surface and by destroying the microorganisms they come into contact with. With resistant bacteria on the rise, antimicrobial coating is one way to protect ourselves and others against the threat of infection and illness.
While it is important to follow strict personal hygiene practices and keep items clean, silver antimicrobial protection works in between cleaning times, offering products a further defence against microbial growth.
How antimicrobial agents work
An antimicrobial agent has the capacity to inhibit the growth of microorganisms on the surface of a material. Therefore, antimicrobial agents have been incorporated into surface coatings such as paints and finishes.
It is important to note that something ‘antimicrobial’ could also combat beneficial organisms, so commercial products have been developed to selectively attack the unwanted microorganisms, while having little detrimental effect against the beneficial types.
The advantages of having antimicrobial surfaces for walls, instruments and particular ‘high touch’ points such as lockers, doorknobs, railings, switches, tables and trays have been known for decades in medical and food preparation establishments.
The benefits of antimicrobial coatings can be more widely applied, as hygiene awareness grows in our schools, workplaces and homes.
Safe surface coatings that look and do good
The antimicrobial powder coat that we use for our products is based on silver ions that have been incorporated into coating products during the manufacturing stage.
Silver ions are generated from elemental silver, which has been used from ancient to modern times for its anti-disease and anti-spoiling properties.
Reducing bacterial co-infection at high touch points
According to ABC Science News, scientists have shown that COVID-19 can survive outside the body on plastic and stainless steel surfaces for up to 72 hours.
Antimicrobials inhibit bacteria, mould and some viruses. While COVID-19 is a new virus that we need to learn more about, at this stage just achieving a reduction in bacterial co-infections is very important for public health. The silver ion technology in the coating we use has been tested for antimicrobial efficacy in accordance with ISO 22196:2011 and proven effective against a range of bacteria.
The basic defence strategy of cleaning our hands and surfaces regularly is agreed. Dulux’s antimicrobial surface coatings can help play a part between thorough cleans as they reduce disease risks posed by microorganisms at high touch points.
Davell’s products can be prepared with a silver ion based antimicrobial protective coating, coloured in White Satin.
