The debate continues – to ban or allow mobile phones at school?

November 23, 2018

Davell works with many schools to provide lockers that meet a wide variety of needs. We have seen that one of the hottest topics for 2018 has been whether to ban mobile phone use in schools, with an increasing number of schools choosing to implement rules ensuring that students keep their phones in lockers.

It has recently been reported that schools  including Newington College, Shore School, Tara Anglican College for Girls and Deniliquin High School have implemented rules where students must keep their mobile phone in their lockers with Newington encouraging parents to contact students via school reception.

It’s not just New South Wales Schools that are taking action, McKinnon Secondary College in South-East Melbourne has also implemented a policy where students have to leave their phones in their lockers, only accessing them once school has finished at the end of the day. The school’s principal reported that learning opportunities had improved because there were fewer distractions.

Countries like France have taken the plunge already, banning schoolchildren under 15 from using their mobile phones at any point during the school day. Australia now seems to be looking into the issue closely.

The New South Wales Government is currently consulting with parents, students, teachers, principals and experts about this issue via their review into the Non-educational use of Mobile Devices in Schools.

Responses to the review have been mixed, with some psychologists believing that it will help address cyber-bullying and improve concentration. Others believe the devices shouldn’t be banned because they assist with learning.

Currently, Australian schools are able to put their own policies in place when it comes to how and when students can use mobile devices. But, a recent article highlighted that “youth advisory group Year 13 found 89 per cent of Australian students had used their mobile phones in the classroom regardless of their school’s policy.”

Davell has worked hard to develop storage systems that will assist schools to meet and address the mobile phone issue now and into the future.

The company has recently released the second generation of their popular Charging Lockers that have been providing students, teachers and the school executive with the option to securely store electronic devices throughout the day for many months.

These lockers now have three charging options including Single General Power Outlet (GPO), Single GPO with Twin Ultra-Fast Charger (TUF) USB Type-A and USB Type-C and TUF USB Type-A & USB Type-C. Further details regarding these lockers can be found here.

We also supply innovative Mobile Phone Lockers where students can store and charge their mobile phones safely and securely. These lockers are now available with the option of ‘shatter resistant’ clear acrylic doors. You can see the full specifications for these lockers here.

It appears that those schools which proactively address this issue, regardless of any impending changes to the law, will benefit from having sound policies and procedures in place and that is where Davell can assist.
